I think it could go down very poorly with the rest of the team if the Flames bought out Stajan.

True, but the cap savings would be pretty small. (Since you'd have to replace them.)
Of course there could be a trade where the other team needs a player sent the other way, so that's one possibility. Or if you need to clear up a spot for a prospect.
