I'm probably in the minority here, but the more I think about it, the more I wouldn't mind Elliott back on a cheap(really cheap) short term deal. I just don't like the idea of continually using the goalie as a scape goat. I just worry that like always blaming the coach it will take accountability away from the other players. Elliott crapped the bed in the playoffs, but other than in game 3(in which 2 of the goals shouldn't have counted) he never cost his team the games all together. Game 4 he let in 1 goal and we scored 1 goal, you aren't going to win a lot of games only scoring 1 goal.
In a salary cap world you will always have areas that are weaker than others and it might be good for the young players to realize they will need to overcome these situations in order to win. We are still a year or 2 away from being Stanley cup contenders so a short contract for a guy with something to prove without the pressure of it being a contract year on a team learning a new system with a new coach might not be a bad option. It would give us time to let our goalies in the system develop too, so that we don't need to pay $6M/season to a goalie who might not fit in either. I really don't like the idea of simply writing off a goalie after 1 season in which he wasn't terrible(and actually got us to the playoffs).
The start of the season sucked, but remember all the odd man rushes and breakaways we were gifting other teams at that time? The whole team was a mess. I don't think Carey Price would have been able to bail us out in those situations. If they change the goalie coach I'd be ok if they gamble in the short term. I hate the thought of us signing bishop to a 5 or 6 year deal only to have gillies emerge in 2 seasons as the better option with no way of moving bishop if his play falls off a little bit.
