You are confusing Gulutzan's practice of not addressing players after the games with being insular and mercurial. Based on all reports he is neither of those things. Gulutzan actually spoke to this in an interview mid-way through the season. He said that he doesn't like to talk to the team right after games because the emotions are too fresh—he much prefers to let things settle, and feels like he everyone is able to assess situations more rationally and clearly outside of the heat of the moment.
It may not be commonplace, but it sure makes a tonne of sense.
