and that's one "out" that they can attempt in order to restore some sense of order to the region...
oust Assad, keep the rest of the government intact...so there's not the total reconstruction like Iraq, and the centers of power in Syria remain relatively unscathed...
not so great for Assad, but amenable to Russia and Iran...deescalates the situation... potentially install someone that's less tyrannical... long term? who knows whether it will work...
the sectarian violence is the issue here, it may be too late to put that genie back into the bottle at this point... Undoubtedly an alawite (Sh ii te) president will be installed so it quite possible that that regime goes authoritarian down the road and suppresses sunnis and other minorities in retaliation of the uprising to begin with...
