i think the issue, for me, with the behind the back pass, a) it wasn't particularly fast, so there was plenty of time for Gibson to see it happening... and b) Johnny started making that move while gibson was still nailed to the post - he wasn't crossing in front the net to force gibson to slide across... so there was no place to shoot. Toronto's OT goal happened because Hotby vacated the post to follow that puck, so that back pass there had a wide open net.
Johnny should have shot it low to the left and hoped for gibson to give up a rebound to where frolik was...
Gibson has been giving up rebounds quite bit; calgary needs to have a better net presence to try to capitalize

In that situation, you always shoot, that is the prime scoring chance right there, you can't get a better opportunity. Plus it is so close to the net that chances are, even if Gibson saves it, there's going to be a rebound.
To not even get a shot off is ridiculous and shows that Johnny is struggling. He's over thinking.
