I wonder if the intent is one force user left being neutral chaotic. Not there to defend the galaxy from the dark or conquer the light but to merely follow the will of the force whether its dark or light.
This seems to be the logical way for it to go.

The light and the dark are not the answers to a 'grey' universe. Luke saw his father come back from the dark side, he has dabbled with the power in his fight in the throne room, and he saw the followers of the 'light' lie to him and hide truth. Presumably if Anakin was a force ghost he would have talked to Luke a bit like Obi Wan did and tell him about what sent him down the path to the Dark Side which was rooted in something as natural as love. It was effectively the Jedi's stringent rules that caused him to be vulnerable and go astray (It is a shame that theme wasn't better told in the prequels, it had nuggets of a good idea, just horribly, HORRIBLY told). Like a priest getting kicked out of the church for marrying and having kids.

But moreso I think the balance part would be better defined in the works of the 'original Jedi Temple' and the methods of the Jedi like Yoda and Obi-Wan were taught were the result of of centuries of corruption and change by zealots and the like that ultimately resulted in an imbalanced Force. That what the Jedi became is not what they were intended to be, and that's why Luke things they must end. The big push of "spirituality doesn't need a church" kind of thing.

I'm sure I can come up with something more coherent later but the adrenaline is flowing. Basically Star Wars blue balls for 8 months now.
