Well those are actually 3 different coverages. Quick overview:

Collision: covers damage to your vehicle as a result of a collision (another car, tree, etc)

Comprehensive: covers things like fire, theft, generally collisions with animals such as deer.

Liability: Covers the damages that occur to another party as a result of your liability. For example you rear-end someone and at "at-fault" (AKA liable) for the damages.

The insurance you must carry to drive a vehicle in Alberta is liability coverage (PLPD which is personal liability, personal damages). Collision is optional, but the risk is that you have an accident and damages to your vehicle that are your fault and the vehicle won't be repaired. If you have collision and the accident is disputed or they can't reach the third-party involved, or that party won't accept liability, you can have the vehicle repaired and the insurer will act on your behalf to get it taken care of.
