Gillies is 23, his time to make a push for the main roster is now. Playing time is obviously important for a goaltender but the "as much net time as possible" doesn't always wash. Juuse Saros has played less then 40 games each of the last two seasons between the NHL and AHL and he looks fine.
Tukka Rask shared the net early in his career getting limited time, Andrei Vasilevskiy the last two years, Frederik Andersen now with Toronto and Jon Gibson shared the net at various points. Plenty of examples. Getting 23-30 starts in the NHL is better then 50 in the AHL IMO.
