Now, I told myself I wouldn't discuss advanced stats on CP after all the evidence showing Brouwer is an awful hockey player was not only ignored but pissed on around these parts. But just this once I will make an exception:
When Connor McDavid is on the ice, the Oilers have expected PDO of 100.51 which is excellent. However they have an actual PDO of 102.74 which is simply unsustainable and likely has to do with teams giving him too much respect and losing track of their check. Come playoff time he will be shadowed heavily but teams won't leave guys open back door to stop Connor from shooting on their goalie, as he is actually a really meeiocre goal scorer among star players.
What else is unsustainable?
How about the second highest PP goal rate when trailing games? You gonna bank on that when the going gets tough?
or Talbot having better adjusted save percentages than Price and Lundqvist? Is that the hill you wanna die on?
Additionally, unsustainable stats aside, they have stacked their first line with their two best players, unlike 15 other playoff teams. When the Patrick Maroon-Connor McDavid-Leon Draisaitl line is off the ice the Oilers have:
48% CF (basically comparable level of play to a 25th place team) and 47.26% SCF and 48% GF%.. These are actually sustainable stats. They are however the stats of a non playoff team and the kind of stats that will be exploited a la Ferland V Sbisa two years ago or Kessel V Polak last year... if McLellan were the kind of coach who could hang around in playoff chess matches he wouldn't have lost a series with a 3-0 lead three years ago and responded by blaming the players. What will he do, strip Connor of the C when a guy like DeBoer outcoaches him? Presenting #97 Onner MDavid
