So I don't know how far they expect to make it but it can't be very far. Teams don't go from 29th place to cup contention. Usually they have to ascend a few levels over a few years first. It's just unheard of.

Blackhawks - '07-08 - missed playoffs, '08-09 - lost in conference finals (qualifies as being in Cup contention), '09-10 - won Stanley Cup.
Pittsburgh - '05-06 - missed playoffs, '06-07 - lost in conference quarterfinals, '07-08 - lost in Stanley Cup (certainly in contention), '08-09 - won Stanley Cup
Carolina - '03-04 - missed playoffs, '04-05 - lockout, '05-06 - won Stanley Cup
That's three pretty recent examples right there. Not saying it's the norm or even what the Oilers will do this year, but it's most certainly not "just unheard of."
