I actually think it would be worse for middle of the pack teams. Could you imagine this season if the Oilers primed to finally make the playoffs after 10 years had to deal with McDavid leaving them for a few weeks and risking injury that would sink their playoff hopes? At least with the Caps they will probably be a good enough team to be able to withstand Ovechkin being overseas for a few weeks. Teams battling for a wildcard spot where every single point may count may not be so fortunate. Maybe the Jets finally are in position to make the playoffs and Sheifele, Wheeler, Laine, and Ehlers want to go to the Olympics. Would cripple that team and obviously teams will have to draw a line in the sand.
