It's pretty tangential to linking the Russians to influencing the election, too. Whether or not it was a week or two in advance of his inauguration.

No but the current allegations of Russian money being exchanged and use of foreign state resources in a coordinated effort to influence an election are extremely illegal. There are also evidence of lots of data transfer between the Russian banks, DeVos/Price family business and Trump businesses that show electronic communications between the three well in advance of the election. In that case, if all the allegations turn out to be true, it is no longer just a back channel for diplomacy, it's an illegal and treasonous activity as it is a foreign money/perks in exchange for influence scheme.
