He won't be participating, I would bet money on it. It will come down to legality. He has a legal binding contract with the Washington Capitals which contracts are under the authority of the NHL. The IIHF wants no part of that because they will take the backlash if they allow him to play. How many millions of dollars in lost revenue damages and other things do you think the NHL could sue the IIHF for? I am betting a lot. They are not going there. Unless Ovechkin walks away from his contract and retires to go to the KHL ala Kovalchuk he won't be participating in the Olympics.
