The injury excuse is a bit moot when the NHL holds a similar tourney where players could get injured just as easily. While it's not in the middle of the season like the Olympics, even a summer injury has the potential to have pretty big consequences when it's to one of your stars.
Like most thing, the NHL not wanting to go to the Olympics is primarily a money issue.

but that doesn't mean the other issues aren't real too.
The Islanders lost Tavares last time and it essentially ended their season. Many NHL clubs need to keep momentum in seasons to make sure their fan base doesn't just look elsewhere when the olympics are on, and I can see that.
I know we are all supposed to hate the league and Bettman as a starting point, but I personally would have loved to see the CBA extended in order to get the owners to buy in.
Either way I can see it as an issue for sure.
