My guess is that United has somehow figured out yet another way to screw the common passenger.
"Im sorry your tablet is not allowed on the plane"
"But you can rent one of our pre-screened and approved tablets for $49.95"
"There will also be a $14.95 charge to activate the wifi on the tablet"
