They still have 2 contract spots this season, so they can sign a college guy and burn a year if they want to.
They also only have 28 contracts committed for next season, and Treliving has shown he isn't afraid to let pending RFAs that don't fit in his plans go by not tendering qualifying offers. They could conceivably sign a few players to NHL contracts that start next season. For example the two guys that the Capitals signed today have their contracts start next season and therefore they count towards next season's contract limit.
