I get what you're saying, but honestly, cell phones aren't why people go bankrupt. Even if you have a $100/month plan and new iPhone, dropping that isn't going to save you if you suddenly need some diagnostic testing done, or if you develop a health issue that needs a non-generic Rx, and god forbid you develop an actual major health problem that needs surgery or a hospital stay, and if you're a woman and get pregnant and your baby needs NICU time? Good luck ever getting out of that debt.
Even at a high end rate, cell phone costs are minuscule compared to healthcare costs, it was a statement made about poor people by someone who has no idea what it's actually like to be poor. The only way a cell phone can compare to insurance costs is if you literally never have to use that insurance.
