So what is one expected to do without a cell phone? Most people no longer pay for landlines, they keep a cell phone only. Phone access is pretty necessary, I'd say, if only for the purposes of applying for jobs and getting calls for interviews. Not to mention that's how a doctor would contact you with regards to appointments/test results, etc. And beyond that, I'd need to not pay my cell phone bill for nearly 2 1/2 years in order to hit my deductible on my health insurance for a single year.

If you have a major, chronic health problem, that cell phone cost is pennies on the dollar for what you're forking out in medical bills. Even if you have a minor, short-term health issue, by the time you get up to your deductible, you could buy 4+ iPhones outright.

It was an asinine statement to make about people who are scraping to get by, coming from a man with a base salary of 174k/year, who has government-provided, taxpayer-funded, top-tier healthcare that he'll never have to worry about losing or paying for himself.
