I don't know if he's aware of this, but most of the time nowadays, you can get an iPhone/Galaxy/whatever on a lease from your cell phone company for a few dollars a month (I pay 8/month for my Galaxy, I know others who pay all the way up to 15 or 20/month for brand new iPhones).
By contrast, my employer subsidized healthcare? $214/month. (I'm responsible for $95ish of that) And that's with a sizable deductible no less. If I had major health problems and knew I would need regular care (cancer, etc) I'd easily be paying double or triple that every month.

Most people's phone bill (including payment for the phone) isn't to far off from that. I'm not saying he's got a point, but people do flush a load of money down the toilet on cell phones.
