It is not a guarantee, but a four-point gap with 18 games remaining is certainly more meaningful than "nothing." It means that for the Flames to miss the playoffs BOTH the Kings and the Blues must gain +5 points on them. Given how well this team has been playing for a month now this is an extremely tall order. And no, that four point gap can not disappear in a single night, since a team can only earn a maximum of two points in a game.

It is not as simple as drawing this conclusion from a winning record. Fans who are confident about the Flames playing in the playoffs are also factoring in the gap I addressed above, the balance of the schedule, and how the contending teams are playing at present. The Flames have put themselves in an excellent position to make the playoffs, and it will be a huge surprise to see them falter to such a degree that they do not make it.
