Lazar is a reclamation project who cost a 2nd rounder. No doubt Treliving will try to find a way to protect him. But if they can't, and that's all the Flames lose in the expansion draft, they'll take their medicine and move on, like every other team in the league.

Absolutely agree with this. Fans are far too focused on the 'what have you done for me lately' thing. Remember Frolik had a so so first year here and there were lots of rumblings that he wasn't a good signing either (by many of the same people).
Having said that, it still may turn out that they don't protect him (though if so, they will probably still protect him by convincing Vegas not to take him).
