The Flames got into the position they were/are in because they failed to prioritize the draft, and now they are again deficit spending on draft picks to augment the roster. I don't necessarily disagree with that, it remains to be seen if Lazar will work out, but on the whole the Flames still need to be picking more frequently than their peers to find a diamond in the rough or two.

Last few years, the Flames were accumulating draft picks. Some of them were used to draft a few good prospects, others were used as currency (Hamilton trade).
Once in a while, especially when its considered a weak draft, you need to take a shot on players such as Lazar.
The problem becomes when you trade the picks every year, especially for aging veterans. Lazar is 22, he still has some upside.
