As I understand it, performance bonuses are paid after the end of the season by the team the player ends the season with.
Players are paid based on the number of days they spend on a team's roster during the season. This year, there are 180 days in the season. After the deadline, there will be 40 days left in the season. Acquiring Vrbata would cost $222,222.22 for the rest of the season on his base salary.

Not sure how accurate his info is, but on the afternoon show on 960 Derek Wills was saying that Arizona has already paid the first two performance bonuses to Vrbata.
