I've had my car broken into as well. The police won't do anything other than giving you a case number that you can take to your insurance. They won't be interested in taking fingerprints.

With my car they didn't break the window, they jammed something into the keyhole and screwed up the lock, so I had to have it replaced. I had a $100 detucable, so between the locks and the stereo they stole, it was worth it to go through insurance. If you have a larger detuctable though it may not be worthwhile to go through insurance.
