The draft lottery weighting, although improved recently, hasn't made sense since the salary cap and lowered UFA age were brought in. When you get parity from those 2 things, a weighted draft lottery just messes it up.
I know I have been beating this drum for a long time, but now that there is an even economic playing field, rewarding bad teams with the best talent does two things. It either hurts the talent since those teams tend to be terrible at developing players, or they end up with a salary structure that isn't sustainable since drafting in the top 5 for several years will force them to be a top heavy team (which doesn't work in hockey). It's easy enough to say they should just trade those picks for depth, but the cap system has made it more difficult to make hockey trades.
This is why I am not worried about the Oilers long term as they will be dismantling soon.
Give every team an equal chance to win the lottery and then snake each round.
