Rookie season: 36 points. That's more than what Monahan put up in his rookie season, and more than what Iginla put up in his sophomore season (almost as if a "sophomore slump" is a known risk or issue with young developing players).
Sophomore season: Developing his 200 foot game (first year as a centre), and learning to be an effective player night in and night out even when he's not producing offensively.
I think your expectations are out of whack. Player development is not a straight shot upwards, and the fact that he's had two different coaches while playing two different positions is also worth mentioning.

To be fair 36 points as a rookie doesn't mean much, Yak had 31 points in 48 games as a rookie and look where he is now. I'm not saying Bennett is or will be a bust, but spouting off points from a rookie season don't mean much. But there is definitely reason for concern because on too many nights the only time you notice him is because he is taking a penalty.
