So basically: cheap simple working class treats = donuts. Expensive OTT artisan hipster/yuppie treats = doughnuts.

I may however, have discovered the ultimate "doughnut" - a xuixo (shoe-shoe), from Girona, Spain. Viennoiserie dough (croissant/danish), filled with crema catalana (citrus-y creme brulee), deep fried and rolled in sugar. We left Girona three days ago and I'm going through withdrawal.
