Well I think the problem is he started out with some pretty legitimately horrible ####. If reporters could go back with hindsight and grade everything with an appropriate outrage level, then yeah, it might be more reasonable.
However he basically started out as a birther, and his first big general policy idea was to build a wall and deport millions of people. Where do you go from there on a level of reaction?
