The problem is that mainstream Reublicans can't win without the support of deplorables and Tea Partiers. Convincing most moderate Republicans won't matter if they can't appease those other groups.

The right in America is fracturing to the point that I doubt moderates can control it. If they want to quell the influences that brought Trump to power to begin with, they are either going to need to lure right-leaning Dem supporters to crossover, or cross party lines themselves and support the Democrats and try to inject Republican ideals into that party from within.
