The real interesting move is could the Bruins have blocked the hiring? Could they have said "No, he's still under contract to us" and made them wait.
Guess that leaves them on the hook for $3M next year but would have been interesting.

Yes they could have, but I am unaware of a situation where the firing team did.
For example, we had to give the Kings permission to talk to Darryl.
And yes, then the Bruins would still have been paying his salary.
