Duchene is 26 making $6M and when he is 28 he is going to want another 6-8 year deal at similar or more money
Sam Bennett is likely going to get a $2-$3M per bridge for a couple years. Hopefully in that time he proves to be the player the Flames hoped for when they drafted him. Then signing a 22-23 year old to a $6M long term deal is far more appealing than a 28 year old.
Flames make a move like this when they are pushing for the division not a playoff spot.
Having said that I would be willing to part with a collection of lesser assets like picks and prospects to land Duchene or Landeskog.
With a weak draft coming up I am fine with the Flames 1st in play for an impact forward.
