As for the tax issues, why is this "crapping on the brave men and women that protect freedom and our way of life" and not just "paying what you need to in order to attract employment for a position in an organization".
It's a job. Some jobs suck. Some jobs are dangerous. Lots of jobs help people. Picking a dangerous job that doesn't pay much doesn't grant you automatic hero status.
