I don't take too much out of this meeting of leaders because all of the real work gets done at a ministerial level.

For Justin this was about looking leaderlike and to stem the bleeding.

For Trump this was to make him look like a reasonable guy with a friendly country. After a rough start in terms of international interaction, he can point to positive strides with Canada and Japan.

At a ministers level I expect things to be a little more strident.

I'm still convinced that the US is going to want Canada to significantly increase its defense spending. I would also expect that America will encourage Canada to increase their border security as well as Trump strikes me as a guy that believes the booga booga story of terrorists coming through Canada to the US.

I would also think that the frame work will be laid to reopen NAFTA and to reassure Canada that the American's don't want to harm the Canadian economy but the States will want to increase manufacturing of American products in America using American goods and resources.

What does Canada want?

Not much. I know they're looking for US direction in terms of peacekeeping. I would assume that they're concerned about what America is doing in terms of business tax rates and a buy American first program in the states. They'll probably bring up concerns about America's refugee program and immigration rule changes especially considering that we're starting to see refugee's coming into Canada from the US.
