A while later I finally got my desktop (only on one screen), but with no icons on it. And when I click the start menu, and try to open anything (I've tried to open control panel, and chrome), nothing happens at all. Although the start menu seems to open up.

I doubt this is a windows issue, but I am wondering if any computer guys know better than me? Corrupt windows on the HD?

I am ready to start with a fresh install, but is that my issue here? I have a Samsung SSD as my boot drive, it's about 1 year old. Are they unreliable? I've had to do a few clean installs the past couple years and am sick of it, so any advice on a reliable HD if that is indeed my issue?
Interesting. You sound like you have a similar issue to me but far more severe. There is a 30 second delay at times between when my main login screen appears to where I can actually type in my PW. I too have a Samsung drive as my O/S drive.
