I think he makes really good decisions with the puck, and doesn't cough it up or simply throw it away often at all. I didn't notice this myself until I started actively counting last season during a stretch of games, and found it quite surprising.

With that being said, I don't mean he makes awesome high-end blue-line to blue-line tape to tape passes. Simply that he gets it out without giving it away (as in an icing, or simply dumped-in off the boards into the neutral zone to relieve pressure) or coughing it up regularly.
In the second paragraph, do you mean he doesn't do many dump-outs or icings? Because in my viewings he very rarely (even for a bottom pairing guy) gets the puck out of the zone and into transition. Usually it's dump-and-change.

Also, regarding Stone. The worst team in the league (i.e. a team that could really use some good defensemen) didn't want to go long term with this guy last year after putting up 0.5 PPG playing on the first pairing with OEL and instead they signed him to a 1 year deal. Maybe he's the next Petry, but I couldn't know for sure now. I'll have to suffer through some Coyotes games to see what he's like.

He is playing with Goligoski this year, who is a significant downgrade from OEL and his potential partner in Brodie, which does negatively skew his performance. He's never been any good defensively, but last year he was able to outscore his problems. I think if he was signed he'd ultimately underwhelm, like most FA's, but he should be a capable enough #4 if Brodie wasn't just a product of Gio (and oh boy, if that's true we can kiss this rebuild goodbye). Managing the cap to fit him might be hard but if Brouwer can be expansion'd it could open up space for a solid #4.
