For me, it's not a moral question, but a practical one. I have no issue with the state putting someone to death if that person has undoubtedly committed terrible crimes. In fact, sometimes I think it's too humane to just kill them.
The issue I have is that historically, the application of the death penalty was not applied evenly among various demographics and innocent people have been executed. It's a tool that can be easily abused. As long as there is a chance that one innocent person will be executed, it can't be an option.
