As for how nice the City is... Sure NJ and Det arent the the nicest... You can likely group Winnipeg and Edmonton in there... But There are a lot of nice cities in the NHL.

Sure the Flames have a history of going after UFA's, but they have some pretty big holes to fill and to commit $5m+ to Alzner over at least 5 years.. Its a bit of a hope, not a plan..

With that said, lets get back to the city Angle that you brought up.

Lets say Dallas, LA, Philly, Carolina, Van and Calgary all offer Alzner $5.5m over 6 years. You think the Flames have the edge in winning the bid?

There is the Hitmen connection, but I dont know.. He is from Burnaby..
Ok, maybe you don't get around, but there is no way you group Detroit and Jersey with Edmonton or Winnipeg. I know the fun thing to do around here is trash on Edmonton, but relative to alot of American cities, Edmonton is very nice. There are no ghettos there. There might be older neighborhoods, but I would feel comfortable walking down 118th Ave on a late night, but hell no would I be caught walking around 90% of Detroit or Jersey. Likewise, Winnipeg might be lame for night life and whatnot, but it's not scary.

Other than maybe a few areas in Toronto, nothing is really par with some of the ghettos of the US. We don't really have Mexicans beheading the Crips in the street like they do in South LA. Nothing in Canada is remotely that violent. We don't have nearly the murder numbers any major US city has.

The downfall of Canadian cities is that it's cold.
