It is not the job of judges to ensure the compatibility of laws with contemporary values and beliefs, that is the job of politicians. As Scalia often said, garbage in, garbage out. A bad law results in bad outcomes. If people don't like bad laws, they should lobby their politicians to change it. It's a democracy after all.
