I'm an electrician and get paid by the hour. When we work in other cities, either we drive there and back each day and get paid from the time we get to shop in morning to the time we get back to shop at night, or if flying to Vancouver for example, we get paid from time leaving shop to end of that work day in Vancouver (flight included) then paid from time we leave hotel to time we get back each day we're there. Hotels are paid for + $50/day sub when on road.
