I'm on salary and don't get extra compensation for travel.
Either I take the company car or they pay for whatever method of travel I need to use (car rental, taxi, bus/train, plane). They also pay for accommodations, if any are needed, registration for any event that I'm going to and meals that aren't provided by the event.
If I go to a conference somewhere touristy then maybe I'll stay a few extra days (then I have to pay for meals and accommodations for the extra days), but being at a touristy location for work purposes is okay with me and I likely wouldn't be wouldn't be at that location for free anyway so I don't bother counting time in these situations. Doing so just feels so petty to me.
If I fly from Lethbridge to Edmonton and back on the same day for a meeting then it is a longer day than what I am used to, so maybe I'll pick a day and go home an hour or two early within the next week. Maybe I don't. No big deal. I work for a great place that offers a lot of great flexibility so I'm not going to bother with these details. Saves me a lot of hassle that way too.
