Agreed. The reality of the Flames position is if they lose the majority of their games before the deadline, which isn't unrealistic given that it's against tough competitors, they could fall behind Winnipeg and New Jersey for 28th place in the league. There is only 4 points separating the 28th place team and the 16th place team in the NHL, and the Flames (currently sitting 17th) are among 3 teams with the most games in hand.

Treliving is undoubtedly aware of this fact and certainly won't take poorly calculated risks. And like you said, it's not like he's afraid to sell even if he's in the mix of it. With the expansion looming, I could see him thinking beyond this season and trying to take advantage of vulnerable teams moreso than capitalizing on the Flames currently inflated position in the standings
