I think its more important to look at the rate of change in the supply of new energy sources and changes in the patterns of energy demand. Along with a healthy dose of 'it is possible to be blindsided'.

If electrification of the transportation system takes off (and why shouldn't it?) one report has demand for oil dropping by 60%.

I'm not saying that will happen, but the possibility of that happening is real...and I don't think being caught off guard for that possibility is acceptable.
