So remember the all-star weekend trade of 1990 that sent Bernie Nicholls to the New York Rangers for Tony Granato and Thomas Sandstrom? Here were the stats for the respective players at the time of the deal:
Nicholls was second on the Kings in scoring, behind only Gretzky
47GP - 27G - 48A - 75P - -9 - 66PIM - 15.7%SP
For the Rangers, here are Granato and Sandstrom's lines (respectively):
37GP - 7G - 18A - 25P - +1 - 77PIM - 8.9%SP (8th leading scorer on the roster)
48GP - 19G - 19A - 38P - -10 - 100PIM - 11.4%SP (2nd leading scorer on the roster)
Nicholls was 28 at the time, while Granato and Sandstrom were both 25. Nicholls was a C while both Rangers played on the wing.
Hard to compare eras and trades pre-cap to now, but I'm wondering about what kind of deal would be similar in today's environment? Matt Duchene is probably the available player closest to being a Nicholls comparison in today's NHL - what kind of return could he fetch that would be similar?
Just idle speculation over all-star weekend.
