Backlund already has taken a "hometown discount". The deal he is currently on. He is going to be a 29 year old UFA. His last chance at a big payday.
Extending Backlund might in fact be the best move but the Flames are going to have to pay him market value. And there is nothing wrong with that. If the money is there for players who don't deserve it, there should be money for players who do.
