They tried that no dark side or light side thing in the EU, and its based on you and how you want to use the force.
I'm also a fan of the idea that came out of the SWTOR game when your talking to the main villain. And he basically says some people think the force is a river in which you drown.
At the same time another villain said the Jedi see the force as their master whereas the Sith seek to enslave it, but what they do with it comes from their choices.
At the same time, I think that the cool aspect is that neither the dark side of the light side can ever be truly banished. Even if you go into a room flooded with darkness and light a candle driving off the dark, the dark still resides everywhere that there is a shadow. under your feet, under the bed under the table legs, and eventually that candle will burn out and the darkness will return for a time.
The force isn't evil, but the emotions like hatred and anger in fear force you to use the force in a negative and selfish way and once you start deciding based on the gratification of the need for power your always going to use it that way and take shortcuts. That's why you always see Jedi falling, but you rarely see Dark Side users coming back.
