Agreed. Even the friends I have who follow the sport have lived in North America for quite sometime. You cannot just grow a "foreign sport" easily without some local grassroot development. The Canucks have done a few things (like summer camp) in China since 2012 I believe. The winter Olympics will certainly help but I am not intrigued about long term grow unless you have a NHL version of Yao Ming in the league. Time zone is another factor.
Also, correct me if I am wrong, ice hockey in most part of Asia, at the least in Hong Kong, plays the 4v4 format. There are local enthusiasts on top of ex Pat.

If the Flames ever played an exhibition game there I would have to go. Went to Shanghai in 2015 for a couple of weeks during the F1 and loved it.
