I would say even going back to college his numbers were more a result of the team and defensive system that was in front of him than it was Gillies himself. When Gillies left Nick Ellis stepped in and put up better numbers than Gillies. When he went to the WJC and played against top competition the results were less than stellar.
I think a lot of us were blinded by the eye popping numbers in college, but when you look closer a lot of goalies put up those type of numbers at the college level.
I am not saying he won't be a starter at the NHL level, I just don't see a star goalie when I watch Gillies play.
