It's funny you mention this. I was reading a paper last week that talked about how to psychologically control people and tactics that people like cult leaders and dictators use.
They said that if you are already believed within your group of followers, you usually only have to repeat something, no matter how ridiculous, 3-5 times before it is taken as absolute truth. And the best way to become "believed" is to play yourself as a victim or target of some kind, and then include those people with you.
