I finally saw this and it was a great film even though it is not anything ground breaking or thought provoking. I was a little worried at the slow start jumping to random planets but it got really good in the second half and the battle scene was epic. Definitely the best space battle in any Star Wars film. The Vader attack was also freaking awesome even though it was basically fan service that didn't effect the story. A few other thoughts:
-The CGI on Tarkin was okay but he still looked like an uncanny combination of real life and the Rebels animated series. Considering he had a decent role in this film maybe re-casting would have been a better choice. Oh and CGI Leia was horrible but not a big deal for only a few seconds.
-I liked that they explained the Death Star weakness but it was still a really complex plan that required getting a message to the Rebels, assuming they can win a battle to steal the plans, then conduct a direct attack with a very lucky shot by a force sensitive. Wouldn't it have been easier to have used metric instead of imperial on a few calculations or gone with Windows Vista for the operating system?
-I like they showed disharmony in the Rebel Alliance, but are you really telling me they had their first victory because 20 or so soldiers were inspired by a speech and no one attempted to arrest them for insubordination or even try to stop them at all?
-I thought a few Rebel ships managed to escape with the plans before Vader showed up or did they all get destroyed? If ships other than Leia's had the plans it completely changes the stakes in Episode IV.
-Props to Disney for killing everyone off. I assumed at least Jyn would survive so that was an interesting surprise.
-Doesn't Luke Skywalker fly with Rogue Squadron in Empire? It's kind of cool this movie explains how that call-sign was created.
