I'd like to see them given training on what potential situations could be dangerous and how to avoid them. Then give them lessons on the use of pepper spray and tasers etc.
Also the police should be conducting STING operations on a continual basis. Patrolling isn't good enough. They can take the officers off of traffic duty and have them do something more useful for a change.

Good idea. Where are cops more useful? Making sure people aren't driving 10km over the speed limit, or trying to get violent offenders in jail? Especially since this city is now short on police officers, I would argue you need to allocate those assets to what keeps this city the most safe.
